Southern India is a paradise. Surrounded by the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, this region is popularly known as 'God's own country'. It is easy to believe that the Gods and Goddesses did once live here - the soils are fertile, the seas are bounteous and the people are gentle, friendly and hospitable. The Southern people are known as 'Dravidian' and speak their own language, unlike any other Indian language.

Historically, Dravidians were great builders and travellers. In the Monolithic period they built temples prolifically and dedicated each to a different God. Many of the temples date between the 7th and 18th Centuries. The temples and caves of Mahabalipuram are regarded as one of the marvels of the world. The Madurai temples have a classical Greek resonance, while the 11th Century temple of Gangakondaicholapuram, Darasuram is a stunning display of stone workmanship at its finest. In the bazaar at the Madurai temple you can even participate in a fascinating exchange of offerings to the Gods, unique to this bustling marketplace. You will also have plentiful leisure time while gliding through the backwater canals for two days and nights on a traditional Keralian houseboat. You will have opportunities to visit the local riverside villages, or you can just relax and watch the daily life of the backwater people from your cruising houseboat.
