Darjeeling was once known as the 'Queen of the Hills'. The region is surrounded by the mighty Himalayan chain of Mt Kanchendzonga, the world's third tallest mountain, and offers many trekking options. The Singalila trek begins from Manibhanjyan (2000 meters in altitude) which is nestled in a small hamlet divided between Nepal and India. This trek is one of the most beautiful in India. It is an easy trek through forests of Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Cedars, Pines and Chestnut trees. You will also pass through small villages and see the local people along the way. Your nights will be spent in tents or trekkers huts, sometimes in India, or in Nepal.
This region of the Himalayas is home to the Himalayan Black Bear, musk deer, leopards and even the shy Himalayan Red Panda, which if lucky enough, you may spot one of them crossing a path or at the top of the cedars. The view from Sandaphu to the Everest range is unforgettable - you can see four of the five highest mountains of the world - Mt Everest or Sagarmartha (8848 meters), Mt Kanchendzonga (8589 meters), Lotse (8516 meters) and Mahakalu (8463 meters).
After your trek you can relax in the quaint town of Darjeeling and enjoy a cup of it's world famous tea. Visit the local tea gardens and even have time to take a joy ride in the UNESCO preserved toy train which has run for more than a century.
