Step back in time and immerse yourself in the very heart of Rajasthan, often called 'the real India'. Even though the feudal system of Rajasthan was abolished in 1947, here it still feels very much alive. The forts and palaces of ancient kings (Rajas) hark back to times of opulence, intricate decoration, artistic craftsmanship and luxury. Some have been renovated to become the hotels in which you will stay. Historically, the Maharajas (King of Kings) handed their title down to their brothers or cousins. All were from royal blood. This same royal title was also awarded to exceptionally brave soldiers who showed true valor in times of war. Although these Rajas ruled just a small part of the country, they played a very important role in the history of Rajasthan, and indeed India as a whole. Their legacy is relived in the art and architecture of the time. Even from some of the crumbling Ruins you can see that great care was taken to represent status, nobility and decadence. Some of the lost generation of Rajas still live in the palaces you will visit and they may even tell you their folklore and family legends. In the evenings they often bring local musicians from the villages to revive the noble glory of the past.
